Ellie MacGarry

  • I make drawings, paintings and objects which use an abstract visual language which slips from one work to the next, each one pointing backwards and forwards to one another. Unusual or off-kilter spatial configurations are set up through the use of surface effects and jarring colour relationships. Certain elements or marks reappear, swapping from background to foreground and back again. The use of stripes, grids and other marks combine to produce the illusion of space or kinetic energy as forms appear to bend and skew and these non-specific forms become animated.

The Flyer Paintings came about as a by-product of the making of other larger paintings. Rather than wipe excess paint onto a rag or dissolve it into solvents I began to push it around on the slippery white surface on the back of flyers. Often leftover flyers from my own exhibitions, these throwaway objects are transformed into tiny joyful histories of exhibitions and colours gone by.
